Ghazal Icon Pankaj Udhas Dies at 72 After Battling Prolonged Illness, Family Confirms.

Pankaj Udhas, the well-known ghazal singer, passed suddenly following a protracted illness. His daughter Nayaab Udhas posted a statement on social media confirming his passing. Family sources claim that at around 11 a.m., the singer of hit songs like “Chitthi Ayee Hai” and “Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein” passed away in a Mumbai hospital. The last rituals are expected to happen on Tuesday.

The family released a statement saying, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on February 26, after a prolonged illness.” The music industry is shocked and devastated by the singer’s unexpected passing. As word got out on Monday afternoon, many people expressed their astonishment and grief on social media, with condolences pouring in.

In Gujarat, Udhas was raised in a musically inclined family. At an early age, he and his brothers enrolled at the Rajkot Sangeet Academy to deepen their studies in music. Udhas eventually began studying Hindustani classical music with Ghulam Qadir Khan Sahab. Afterwards, he moved to Mumbai to train under famous singer Navrang Nagpurkar, who was a part of the Gwalior Gharana.

Reportedly, Pankaj Udhas sung a rendition of “Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo” at his maiden theatrical appearance, which happened during the India-China war. After his heartfelt performance, he was given ₹51 by an audience member. The song that he sang in the 1972 K Chatterjee film “Kaamna” marked his singing debut.

Udhas has put out more than fifty albums and a large number of compilations during his career. He has also provided the voice of Naam, Saajan, and Mohra, among other Hindi movies. He kept on performing at different ghazal gatherings, but his most recent playback vocal was for the movie “Dil Toh Deewana Hai” from 2016.
