Kerala Story Movie Review:
The central theme of “The Kerala Story” is the alleged radicalization and conversion of young Hindu women in Kerala to Islam. They are then forced to join ISIS as a result. According to the movie, the real-life experiences of three females from various districts of Kerala are shown.
“The Kerala Story” opens with Adah Sharma’s character Shalini recounting her rough past and the reason she’s in trouble in an interrogation session. It all started when she went to nursing school in Kasargauda, Kerala, along with three other college students.
Shalini narrates the tale, emphasizing her relationship with roommates Asifa, Nimah, and Gitanjali. Asifa secretly intends to convert her roommates to Islam, but nobody knows this. She uses narcotics to brainwash the females and radicalize them with the assistance of her male acquaintances. After finding out she is pregnant, Shalini leaves Pakistan and Afghanistan to marry someone else and then heads to Syria.
Adah Sharma delivers a strong and moving performance as Shalini, later known as Fatima. Her dedication to mastering the Malayali accent shines through on screen. Despite being newcomers, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani excel in bringing their characters to life. Director Sudipto Sen tackles a sensitive and intricate subject, resulting in a film that is challenging to watch due to its unsettling scenes, moments, and dialogues.
In the film, the director has made scenes that naturally make viewers feel uncomfortable. Dealing with sensitive topics can be hard, but Sudipto seems to manage it well. Prasantanu Mohaptra did a great job filming scenes in Afghanistan and the border areas with Pakistan. However, the background music is too loud and takes away from the story.
While the sequences at the hostel with the females are excellent, the film has some dull moments as well, particularly when Asifa tries to brainwash Shalini. There should be cautious because of the horrible rape incident in the ISIS slave camp. Occasionally, the film seems more like a lecture on radicalization than a work of entertainment, which could unnerve people from diverse backgrounds.
