Lift Movie Review: In the latest Netflix film “Lift,” directed by F. Gary Gray, we see a familiar face in the world of heist movies, known for his work in films like “The Italian Job” and “The Fate of the Furious.” However, Gray wanted to bring a fresh perspective to the genre this time.
The story revolves around Kevin Hart’s character, Cyrus Whitaker, who leads a group of international thieves specialized in stealing art.
Things take an unexpected turn when Cyrus’ ex-girlfriend, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is an Interpol agent named Abby Gladwell, catches them in the act of stealing a valuable NFT. Instead of arresting them, she recruits the team for a new mission – to steal $500 million in gold from a plane to prevent a terrorist attack.
“It’s a genre that people really love. Often, the reasons behind the heists vary, and I found the motivation for this particular one quite satisfying,” Gray expressed.
In a chat with Variety, Gray shared insights into how he aimed to make “Lift” stand out among other heist films. He delved into the challenge of making the audience cheer for characters who are essentially criminals and even hinted at the potential for a sequel or franchise.
Which part of filming the heist posed the greatest challenge?
Filming in multiple countries during the COVID pandemic presented unique challenges. We were fortunate to shoot in places like Belfast, Ireland, London, England, and Trieste and Venice, Italy. However, each country had its own set of COVID rules.
Balancing safety while working with a diverse ensemble cast added another layer of difficulty. It was definitely a departure from our usual approach, but judging by the audience response, we managed to overcome these challenges and make it work.
