Chill Alert: Delhi Schools Take a Freeze Break – Grades Up to 5 to Hibernate for the Next 5 Days Amidst Cold Spell

Amidst the chilly weather, Delhi has decided to temporarily close Delhi schools up to class 5 for the next five days. The Delhi government initially issued a directive extending the winter vacation for all schools in the national capital. However, this decision was swiftly reversed, with the Department of Education clarifying that the extension order was issued in error. The correct decision was scheduled for January 8.
Delhi School News:

The updated order, as reported by ANI, stated, “Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024, regarding the extension of Winter Vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Further instructions on this matter may be issued in due course.”

The Arvind Kejriwal government, in its previous directive, prolonged the winter break until January 10 for all government-aided and unaided recognized private schools in the national capital territory (NCT). This decision was justified by the presence of ‘extreme cold waves and IMD’s yellow alert.’

Delhi Education Minister Atishi emphasized that primary schools, up to class 5th, would remain closed for an additional week. However, for classes 6th and above, schools were instructed not to commence activities before 8 am and after 5 pm, acknowledging the need for caution in the prevailing weather conditions.

Delhi experienced overcast and foggy conditions on January 6, impacting the daily lives of its residents. The mercury climbed to a modest 15.2 degrees Celsius during the day, while the early morning recorded a low of 8.9 degrees, contributing to a cool and mist-laden atmosphere.

Temperature Condition:

Delhi found itself in the clutches of chilly temperatures as the national capital marked a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius on January 2, slightly above the usual range. Prior to this, the minimum had been recorded at 6 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The RWFC Delhi forecast indicated expectations of dense to very dense fog in isolated areas, alongside cold day to severe cold day conditions at select locations in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until January 7.

In response to the escalating severity of air pollution levels, the Delhi government proactively declared an advanced winter break for schools in November, originally slated from the 9th to the 18th.

Acknowledging the pressing need to address the environmental concerns, the December winter break for all schools has subsequently been rescheduled to align with the earlier dates of November 9-18.
