Chandigarh Mayor Election 2024: Big Win for BJP, Manoj Sonkar Gets 16 Votes Out of 36, 8 Votes Not Counted.

BJP has won the Chandigarh Mayor Election. Manoj Sonkar, a BJP councillor, is now the new mayor. Sonkar received 16 votes, while Kuldeep Singh, who was the joint candidate of the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), got 12 votes. There was a problem in the election because people accused the person in charge, Anil Masih, of putting tick marks on the votes. This caused eight votes to be canceled.

Chandigarh Mayor Election Manoj Sonkar

A person from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) wanted to have a choice called “None Of The Above” (NOTA) in the election, but it couldn’t happen because the rules in the Municipal Corporation Act don’t allow for it. Manoj Sonkar, aged 39, has studied up to Class 7 and runs a liquor business. His win is an important moment in the city’s leadership.

The journey to these mayoral elections was closely observed. Originally set for January 18, the election got delayed because the person in charge was not feeling well. This caused members of the AAP and the Congress to protest, thinking the BJP might be trying to control things. The High Court of Punjab and Haryana stepped in and moved the elections to January 30, instead of the later date of February 6.

Security During Election:

Keeping things safe was a big deal during the election, and around 700 police officers, along with other security forces, were there to make sure everything stayed peaceful. The voting happened in the Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, Sector 17. A well-known Member of Parliament, Kirron Kher, who was part of it by virtue of her position, cast the first vote, and the voting took about an hour.

Impact of Chandigarh Mayoral Election in Lok Sabha Elections 2024:

The outcome of the Chandigarh mayoral election is expected to have a ripple effect on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The mayoral election serves as a barometer for the political climate in the region, providing insights into the preferences and sentiments of the electorate.

The victory of Manoj Sonkar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the mayoral race may boost the confidence of the party and its supporters. A successful performance at the local level often translates into increased momentum for the party in larger, national elections. The BJP may leverage this win to showcase its governance and leadership capabilities, aiming to garner support across Chandigarh and beyond.

Conversely, the opposition parties, particularly the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), may analyze the election results to strategize and strengthen their positions for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Any shortcomings in their performance at the mayoral level may prompt a reevaluation of their political strategies and campaign approaches.

Moreover, the controversy surrounding the election process, such as the accusations against the presiding officer, could fuel debates and discussions in the political landscape. Opposition parties may use these incidents to question the fairness of the electoral process, potentially influencing public opinion leading up to the Lok Sabha elections.

In summary, the Chandigarh mayoral election is not just a local event but holds significance as a precursor to the larger political landscape. The results and dynamics established during this election could shape the narrative, strategies, and alliances of political parties as they gear up for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
