Jet Airways Visionary, Naresh Goyal, Appeals in Court: ‘With Folded Hands,’ Despair in the Face of Rs 538 Crore Fraud Allegations. A Stark Portrayal of Goyal’s Health Struggles and Personal Turmoil, Including His Wife’s Cancer Battle.
Founder of Jet Airways, Naresh Goyal, Facing Alleged Rs 538 Crore Fraud, Pleads Before Mumbai Special Court: A Desperate Appeal with ‘Folded Hands,’ Expressing a Loss of Hope in Life.
In September 2023, the Enforcement Directorate apprehended the founder of Jet Airways, Naresh Goyal, over an alleged Rs 538 crore bank fraud.
Currently held in judicial custody at Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail, Goyal recently filed a bail application before special judge M G Deshpande. During the court proceedings on Saturday, Goyal, with folded hands and ‘continuous tremors in his whole body,’ pleaded for a few minutes of personal hearing, granted by the judge.
In a poignant submission, Goyal revealed the fragility of his health, describing it as ‘very bad and precarious.’ He shared the distressing news that his wife Anita is bedridden, battling advanced-stage cancer, while their only daughter is also unwell.
The unfolding personal and legal drama sheds light on the challenges faced by the once-prominent aviation figure.
The tycoon emphasized that the prison staff faced limitations in aiding him, drawing attention to his swollen and painful knees, expressing an inability to fold his legs.
The judge, attentive to his submissions, observed the septuagenarian businessman’s trembling body, noting his dependency even for standing.
In the face of deteriorating health, the septuagenarian entrepreneur pleaded not to be transferred to J J Hospital, citing the arduous journey and subsequent follow-ups as troublesome.
Instead, he appealed to be allowed to “meet his end within the confines of the jail,” underlining his profound despair and preference for death over enduring his present circumstances.
Amidst his health struggles, Naresh Goyal expressed concerns about the lengthy queues at medical facilities, hindering timely access to doctors.
The septuagenarian businessman cited challenges in follow-up examinations after initial consultations, emphasizing the impracticality of personally attending court due to his health.
Goyal insisted on a physical appearance this time to personally submit his concerns but conveyed that he wouldn’t press for it in the future.
The judge acknowledged Goyal’s submissions, assuring him that proper care for his mental and physical health would be provided. The special court directed Goyal’s legal team to take necessary steps regarding his well-being.
In his December bail plea, Goyal detailed multiple health conditions, including heart issues, prostrate concerns, and orthopedic problems. He maintained his innocence, stating there were reasonable grounds to believe he is not guilty.
Naresh Goyal’s bail application is awaiting a decision from special judge M G Deshpande, with the next hearing scheduled for January 16. The ED case against Goyal, his wife, and former Jet Airways executives stems from a CBI FIR alleging a Rs 538 crore fraud at Canara Bank.
