Earthquake Today: Today, Delhi experienced fresh tremors following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan. The quake’s epicenter was situated 241 kilometers northeast of Kabul. The seismic event occurred at a depth of 220 kilometers, prompting the National Center for Seismology to report, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
Pakistani cities like Lahore, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also experienced significant tremors. The US Geological Survey reported a 6.4 magnitude earthquake striking at a depth of 206.6 km, 44 km SSW of Jurm in Afghanistan at 2:50 pm on January 11. There are no current reports of casualties or property damage. Another earthquake, measuring 6.0 in magnitude, occurred at 2:20 pm (local time) in the Hindu Kush region, with a depth of 213 km, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
Following the tremors, additional cities affected include Sargodha and Khushab in Punjab, along with Mandi Bahauddin, Bhakkar, and Nowshera. Reports from PTI via Geo News indicate that Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir also felt the tremors. With the earthquake’s high intensity, there is a substantial likelihood of aftershocks in the region, as noted by Sardar Sarfaraz, the chief meteorologist at PMD. Drawing a parallel, he mentioned the occurrence of similar aftershocks in Japan after a powerful earthquake on January 1.
Situated in a seismically active zone, Pakistan encounters frequent earthquakes and tremors of diverse magnitudes. The nation faced its most devastating earthquake in October 2005, claiming the lives of over 74,000 individuals and causing widespread devastation on an unprecedented scale.
