Arvind Kejriwal may receive notice from ED:
The Enforcement Directorate is anticipated to issue a fourth summons to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday regarding the ongoing investigation into the alleged excise policy case.
Kejriwal, for the third consecutive time on Wednesday, declined to appear before the ED, citing concerns about the agency’s “non-disclosure and non-response approach.”
He argued that such a stance is incompatible with the principles of law, equity, and justice. Kejriwal characterized the ED’s persistence as taking on the roles of judge, jury, and executioner.
Currently, the anti-money laundering agency is reviewing the five-page response submitted by Kejriwal yesterday.
In accordance with the provisions outlined in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the agency might extend its fourth summons to Kejriwal, as reported by PTI.
Arvind Kejriwal, the convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), received deposition requests on November 2 and December 21 in 2023 and January 3 this year.
Amid concerns from AAP leaders about potential raids on Kejriwal’s residence and his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the party has also raised questions about the timing of the notice, particularly in proximity to the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
In the meantime, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that Arvind Kejriwal is evading a probe.
Virendra Sachdeva, the Delhi BJP president, remarked, “Aam Aadmi Party leaders are raising alarms about their CM possibly facing arrest soon… They are engaged in acts of theft and corruption, and now they are causing a commotion.”
BJP spokesperson Bansuri Swaraj emphasized that Kejriwal should remember he is not exempt from the law.
“The ED has issued three summons, yet the CM is evading scrutiny. He seems unwilling to engage in the investigative process,” Swaraj asserted.
The accusation revolves around the contention that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, facilitating liquor traders in obtaining licenses, fostered cartelization and displayed favoritism towards specific dealers purportedly involved in bribery. The AAP has consistently denied these allegations.
After the policy was annulled, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi recommended a CBI investigation. In response, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
